#26 Nutrigenomics, Terrain Theory, and Oxidative Stress with Bob Miller
Can Our Genes Tell Us the Best Diet to Eat?
Everything in moderation… We hear it so often, that most people have accepted it as true, especially in the field of nutrition. The problem is that this slogan only works… until it doesn’t. In this episode, my guest and I discuss an emerging field of science known as nutrigenomics, or genetic-specific nutrition, which can allow us to use our genetic information to inform our dietary choices for better brain health, digestion, and lower inflammation, hopefully allowing us to break free of the “everything in moderation” slogan.
My guest today is Bob Miller, a Traditional Naturopath specializing in the field of genetic-specific nutrition. He earned his traditional naturopathic degree from Trinity School of Natural Health and is board certified through the ANMA. In 1993, he opened the Tree of Life practice and he has served as a traditional naturopath for 27 years. For the past several years, he has been engaged exclusively with functional nutritional genetic variants and related research, specializing in nutritional support for those with chronic Lyme disease.
In this episode we cover
What Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) are, how they influence our health, and how we can use them to inform our dietary choices
What oxidative stress is and why it’s at the core of most chronic diseases
How our genes influence our ability to process and eliminate plant antinutrients, handle fermented foods, and convert vitamins into their active forms
Why bone broth may lower inflammation in one person but increase it in another
What glutathione is and why it’s crucial to our ability to fight infections and fight inflammation
